About Ceiba
Ceiba is a small coastal municipality on Puerto Rico's northeastern coast, best known as the gateway to Vieques and Culebra. Named for the ceiba tree, the town pairs quiet beaches, mangrove reserves and freshwater pools with one of the island's main ferry hubs, giving it a relaxed but well-connected character.
The town was founded in 1838 and grew around agriculture before the construction of Roosevelt Roads Naval Station made it one of the largest naval communities in the Caribbean. After the base closed in 2004, former military land was redeveloped into José Aponte de la Torre Airport, a marina and the Ceiba Ferry Terminal, which now handles most passenger service to Vieques and Culebra.
Ceiba's coastal appeal centers on the Medio Mundo and Daguao Nature Reserve, where Los Machos Beach and Medio Mundo Beach offer calm water, picnic areas and uncrowded sand. Inland, visitors head to Charco Frío and nearby Las Tinajas for natural pools and waterfalls fed by water from the El Yunque area, while the municipality's barrios such as Pueblo, Machos and Daguao keep a low-key, local atmosphere.
The town celebrates its heritage through events including the Fiestas Patronales de San Antonio de Padua in June, the Festival del Marlin in May and the Festival de Chiringas kite festival. Seafood and Puerto Rican cooking anchor the food scene, with waterfront grills, panaderías and casual family restaurants concentrated around the town and coast.
For travelers, Ceiba works as both a destination and a practical stopover. Its ferry and regional air links make it the natural starting point for island-hopping to Vieques and Culebra, while its location near Fajardo, El Yunque and the PR-53 expressway puts eastern Puerto Rico's beaches and attractions within easy reach for leisure visitors and business travelers alike.
