About Jalalabad Airport
Jalalabad Airport is a joint civil and military airfield serving Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar Province in eastern Afghanistan. It functions as a limited regional gateway, with most current activity related to military, United Nations and humanitarian flights rather than scheduled commercial services.
Work on the airport began in the 1950s, during the reign of King Zahir Shah, and the facility was modernised in the 1960s with United States assistance. It later served as a military base during the Soviet–Afghan War and was used by international forces after 2001; the airfield has been under Taliban control since 2021.
The airport sits about 5 km southeast of central Jalalabad and is reached by road. Jalalabad lies roughly 130 km from Kabul, and the airport's location provides access to the city and surrounding parts of Nangarhar Province.
The airfield has a single asphalt runway and a small passenger terminal with limited facilities. A new civilian airport is planned in the Gambiri area northwest of Jalalabad, which would provide additional capacity for the region.
