About Nangarhar
Jalalabad is the capital of Nangarhar Province and the fifth-largest city in Afghanistan, set in a broad river valley where the Kabul and Kunar rivers meet. Its warm climate, citrus orchards and busy bazaars give the city a distinct character within eastern Afghanistan.
The city was founded in 1570 and named after the Mughal emperor Jalal-uddin Mohammad Akbar. Long before that, the area was known as Nagarhara and Adinapur and was an important centre of Buddhist culture; nearby remains such as Ahin Posh reflect that past. Mausoleums of King Amanullah Khan and Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan stand among the city's best-known monuments.
Jalalabad's six districts mix markets, mosques, parks and residential areas. Siraj-ul-Emarat Park, Abdul Haq Park and the Ghazi Amanullah International Cricket Stadium are popular local gathering places, while Nangarhar University is one of Afghanistan's largest higher-education institutions.
As a trade gateway near the Torkham border crossing, the city connects Kabul with Peshawar through the Khyber Pass. Citrus, rice, sugarcane, paper production and cross-border commerce support the local economy and give Jalalabad regional importance.
Visitors come for the city's mild winter climate, gardens, cricket and bazaars, while traders and business travellers rely on its role as eastern Afghanistan's main commercial hub.
