About Wardak
Maidan Shahr, also spelled Maidan Shar or simply Maidan, is the capital of Maidan Wardak Province in central Afghanistan. Located roughly 35 kilometres southwest of Kabul along the historic Kabul–Kandahar Highway, it serves as a small but strategically placed provincial centre surrounded by the southern foothills of the Hindu Kush.
The town has long functioned as a stop on the route between Kabul and southern Afghanistan, giving it a modest trading character built around bazaars, mosques and tea houses. Today its compact centre is mainly residential and commercial, with a limited but busy range of shops, small restaurants and local services.
Maidan Shahr itself is not a major sightseeing destination, but visitors use it as a gateway to the valleys and rural districts of Wardak, where mountain landscapes, orchards and village life reflect the region's Pashtun and Hazara communities. Cricket and football are popular locally, alongside futsal and volleyball.
The town has few formal hotels, so most travellers stay in Kabul and visit as a day trip. Basic guesthouses and local eateries exist in Maidan Shahr, and the city's bazaar provides a genuine glimpse of everyday trade in central Afghanistan.
Because of its position near Kabul and the Kabul–Kandahar corridor, Maidan Shahr is relevant for business, logistics and overland journeys through central Afghanistan, while its cool highland climate and road connections make it a practical base or stopover for travellers heading toward Ghazni and the south.
