About Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar
Donyi Polo Airport, Itanagar is the main airport serving Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh, and the surrounding Papum Pare district in Northeast India. Opened in November 2022, it is the first greenfield airport in Arunachal Pradesh and has improved air connectivity for the capital, reducing earlier reliance on airports in neighbouring Assam.
Located at Hollongi, about 25 km from central Itanagar, the airport handles domestic flights and acts as a gateway to Arunachal Pradesh's hill towns and valleys, including the Ziro Valley and other destinations in the Eastern Himalayas. It has a single passenger terminal and a 2,300-metre runway suitable for narrow-body aircraft such as the Airbus A320.
A new terminal building inaugurated in September 2025 expanded passenger-handling capacity and added facilities for travellers. The terminal includes check-in counters, security screening, baggage claim, cafés, retail outlets featuring local artisans, a library, a children's play area and other passenger amenities.
Ground connections to Itanagar and nearby Naharlagun are mainly by road. Travellers can use taxis, pre-paid cabs, Arunachal Pradesh State Transport Services buses, private transfers or rental cars, while Naharlagun railway station offers onward rail links to other parts of India.
