About Gilze-Rijen Air Base
Gilze-Rijen Air Base is a military airfield of the Royal Netherlands Air Force, located in North Brabant between the cities of Breda and Tilburg. It is the main helicopter base of the Netherlands and handles most of the country's military helicopter traffic.
The site is among the oldest airfields in the Netherlands; the first aircraft, a Blériot, landed in 1910, and the first military exercises followed in 1913. During the Second World War the former civilian and military fields were merged into a single base, which later developed into the helicopter-focused installation it is today.
The base lies roughly 13 km from Breda and about 11 km from Tilburg, close to the A58 motorway and the N260, so both city centres and the surrounding region are reachable by road.
Gilze-Rijen is not a commercial passenger airport: there are no scheduled public flights, and terminal facilities are operational and restricted to military and authorized use. Travelers heading to Breda or Tilburg typically arrive via nearby commercial airports and continue by road.
