General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport is the primary commercial airport serving Peoria and central Illinois. The airfield opened in 1932, and the airport was dedicated as General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport in 2008 after the Peoria-born four-star general. The current 125,000-square-foot passenger terminal opened in 2011, replacing an aging facility and modernizing the airport for a new generation of travelers.
Located about five miles west of downtown Peoria in Peoria County, near Bartonville, the airport operates as a joint civil/military facility shared with the Illinois Air National Guard's 182nd Airlift Wing. Scheduled passenger service is provided by Allegiant Air, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, and United Airlines, connecting the region to major U.S. hubs and leisure destinations.
The terminal places ticket counters, baggage claim, and rental car desks on one main concourse level and provides up to 14 gates. A two-story Ray LaHood Terminal addition was dedicated in 2016, and the airport's two runways include one of the longest in Illinois outside the Chicago area.
