About Diego Aracena International Airport
Diego Aracena International Airport is the main airport serving Iquique and the Tarapacá Region in northern Chile. Originally inaugurated in 1973 as Iquique-Chucumata, it replaced the former Cavancha Aerodrome and has since been modernised through successive concession programmes, including a major terminal expansion completed in 2025 that made it one of the country's largest airports.
Located roughly 45 km south of central Iquique along Route A-1, the airport handles domestic flights connecting the city with Santiago and other Chilean destinations as well as some international services. Its single passenger terminal now has separate boarding areas for domestic and international passengers, and the site operates as a mixed civil and military air base.
The airport is reached by road via Route A-1, with taxis, private transfers and car rental available for the journey into Iquique. Travel to the city centre normally takes around 40 to 45 minutes depending on traffic.
