About Decimomannu Air Base
Decimomannu Air Base is a military airport located about 25 km northwest of Cagliari in the municipality of Villasor, Sardinia. It serves as an Italian Air Force installation and a NATO air weapons training facility rather than a commercial passenger airport.
The site was first used as a military airfield in 1940 during the Second World War and was later redeveloped from 1954 as a NATO-standard training base. Since 1979 it has been a key location for dissimilar air combat training of Allied fighter aircraft, with supporting search-and-rescue and test activities.
Because the base is a military installation, public transport to the airfield is limited. Travelers and visitors usually continue by taxi, pre-booked private transfer, chauffeur service or rental car, often using nearby Cagliari Elmas Airport as the main civilian gateway.
Although Decimomannu does not offer a conventional passenger terminal, its location in southern Sardinia places Cagliari, Decimomannu, Villasor and San Sperate within easy reach by road for onward travel across the island.
