About Chicago Midway International Airport
Chicago Midway International Airport is a major commercial airport on the southwest side of Chicago and the second-busiest airport in the Chicago metropolitan area and Illinois. It serves as the largest base for Southwest Airlines and primarily functions as a point-to-point airport, connecting Chicago to dozens of domestic destinations plus international services to Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.
Opened as Chicago Municipal Airport and dedicated in December 1927, the airport was renamed Midway in 1949 after the Battle of Midway. Although its role shifted after O'Hare opened in 1955, Midway was redeveloped and modernized over the following decades and today operates a single terminal building with three concourses.
Located about 11 miles (18 km) southwest of downtown Chicago's Loop, the airport is connected to the city by the CTA Orange Line, buses, taxis, ride-share services, rental cars and private transfers. The Orange Line reaches downtown in roughly 25 minutes, while driving times vary with traffic.
