In May 2024, the base began handling temporary commercial passenger flights through the Campo Nossa Senhora de Fátima Aerodrome (IATA: QNS), after flooding closed Salgado Filho International Airport in Porto Alegre. Civil passenger processing was set up at ParkShopping Canoas, about 4 km from the base, with shuttle buses linking the terminal and the aircraft.
The base is situated approximately 12 km from central Porto Alegre and around 6 km from the centre of Canoas. Road connections allow travellers to reach Porto Alegre, the Serra Gaúcha region and nearby cities such as Novo Hamburgo and São Leopoldo.
With its military runway and apron facilities and temporary civil terminal, the base provides a practical entry point for domestic travel in the region, supported by local transport, shopping-centre amenities and onward connections.
