About Bir Tikendrajit International Airport
Bir Tikendrajit International Airport is the primary airport serving Imphal, the capital of Manipur, and an important air gateway for Northeast India. Managed by the Airports Authority of India, it connects Imphal with major domestic cities and provides international processing facilities for travel toward Southeast Asia.
The airfield has roots in World War II and replaced civilian operations from Koirengei Airfield in 1959. It was declared an international airport in 2013 and renamed Bir Tikendrajit International Airport after the Manipuri freedom fighter. Today, the airport operates a single integrated terminal building for domestic and international passengers.
Located about 8 km from central Imphal, the airport is reached mainly by taxi, radio cab, auto or private vehicle, and the road journey can take around 20–25 minutes depending on traffic. Public bus services to the airport are limited.
