The airport traces its roots to Harding Field, a World War II-era military airfield. It was later renamed Ryan Airport in 1954 and became Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport, Ryan Field, in 1981. Today it sits roughly 6 miles (10 km) north of downtown Baton Rouge, near Interstate 110.
