About Barksdale Air Force Base
Barksdale Air Force Base is a United States Air Force installation in Bossier City, Louisiana, across the Red River from Shreveport. Opened and dedicated in 1933 and named for Lieutenant Eugene Hoy Barksdale, the base is home to the 2nd Bomb Wing, the 307th Bomb Wing and the headquarters of Air Force Global Strike Command and Eighth Air Force.
The airfield primarily supports military operations and B-52 Stratofortress missions rather than scheduled commercial passenger service. Its main runway, Runway 15/33, is approximately 11,758 feet long, providing capacity for large military aircraft.
Located a few miles east of Bossier City and about ten miles east of Shreveport, the base is reached through controlled access gates and connects to the area via local roads and Interstate 20/220 access.
Because Barksdale AFB is an active military installation, civilian visitors and contractors should follow base access procedures. Nearby Bossier City and Shreveport provide hotels, dining, fuel and ground transportation for travelers continuing to and from the installation.
