About Aviano Air Base
Aviano Air Base is a military air base serving the Friuli-Venezia Giulia region of northeastern Italy and supporting NATO operations. Established by the Italian government in 1911, the base has hosted U.S. Air Force units since a joint-use agreement made it a NATO air base in 1954.
Located about 15 km from Pordenone and roughly 40 miles northeast of Venice, the base is home to the 31st Fighter Wing, the only U.S. fighter wing south of the Alps. It supports military personnel, families, and Space-Available passenger travel rather than scheduled commercial airline services.
The airfield features a single runway and a passenger terminal in the flightline area, with lodging, dining, shopping and transportation services available on and around the base.
Onward travel is possible by local bus, train connections from Pordenone and Sacile, taxi, and rental car, with road and rail links to Venice, the Dolomites, Trieste and other destinations in northern Italy.
