About Amsterdam Airport Schiphol

Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is the main international airport serving Amsterdam and the wider Netherlands. It handles a large share of the country's domestic and international air traffic and is one of Europe's most important hub airports, with strong connections across Europe, North America, Asia and other regions.

Schiphol opened as a military airfield in 1916, and the first KLM passenger flight arrived in 1920, marking the start of its long civil aviation history. Today the airport operates a single-terminal concept, with one large connected building organised into three departure halls and a network of lettered piers serving Schengen and non-Schengen flights.

Located approximately 9 km southwest of central Amsterdam in the municipality of Haarlemmermeer, Schiphol is directly linked to the city by a rail station beneath the terminal, with frequent trains to Amsterdam Centraal in around 15–20 minutes. Buses, taxis, private transfers and road links provide additional onward travel options.

The airport combines extensive passenger facilities, shopping, dining, lounges and onward travel connections, making it a convenient gateway for both business and leisure travellers arriving in the Netherlands.
