About Alexander Field South Wood County Airport

Alexander Field South Wood County Airport opened in 1928 as Tri-City Airport, built for a Nekoosa-Edwards Paper Company subsidiary, and was later renamed in honor of company executive John Alexander. Today it is a municipally owned public-use airport serving Wisconsin Rapids, Wood County and the wider central Wisconsin area.

Located about one mile south of downtown Wisconsin Rapids, the airport is primarily a general aviation facility with a single terminal building, three runways including a 5,500-foot asphalt runway, 24-hour self-serve fuel and no scheduled airline service. It supports charter flights, business aviation, flight training and recreational flying for the region.

The airport serves an area known for its papermaking history and cranberry industry, and it provides convenient access to destinations such as Sand Valley Golf Resort, located less than 15 miles to the south. Travelers without private aircraft typically use Central Wisconsin Airport near Mosinee for scheduled commercial flights.

Alexander Field is reached by road along 1st Street South, with private transfers, taxis and rental cars available for the short journey into Wisconsin Rapids and surrounding communities. Its terminal building, apron and on-site charter and flight-training operators make it a practical gateway for pilots and passengers travelling across central Wisconsin.
