About Al Hudaydah
Al Hudaydah, also spelled Hodeidah, is Yemen's principal Red Sea port and the capital of Al Hudaydah Governorate. Situated on the low-lying Tihama coastal plain, the city combines a busy maritime economy with an older trading heritage that once made it a major gateway for Yemeni coffee exports.
The city developed as a seaport under Ottoman rule in the mid-19th century and was rebuilt after a destructive fire in 1961, when much of the port area was reconstructed. Today the port remains vital to the country, handling a large share of Yemen's commercial and humanitarian imports, while the surrounding region is known for fishing, agriculture and historic towns.
Al Hudaydah is home to more than 100 historic mosques, the old Al-Sour neighbourhood, a Grand Mosque, the Corniche area and landmarks such as Bab Mushrif. Nearby, Kamaran Island offers Red Sea beaches and coral reefs, and the historic towns of Zabid and Mocha reflect the region's deep Islamic and coffee-trading legacy.
The city has a hot desert climate, with intense summer heat and humidity, and its character is shaped by fishing, port activity and Red Sea trade. For travellers and business visitors alike, Al Hudaydah is best understood as a working coastal centre where logistics, humanitarian operations and regional history come together.
Because Yemen's security situation can change rapidly, visitors should seek current travel advice and work with local contacts before planning any trip to Al Hudaydah.
