About Táchira

San Cristóbal is the capital of Táchira state in western Venezuela and one of the largest cities of the Venezuelan Andes. Set in a green mountain valley at around 825 metres above sea level and close to the Colombian border, it is known for its temperate climate and the nickname La Ciudad de la Cordialidad, or the City of Cordiality.

The city was founded on 31 March 1561 by the Spanish captain Juan Maldonado y Ordóñez de Villaquirán and grew as a colonial trading centre between the Andes and the plains. Coffee, agriculture and border commerce shaped its later development, while the discovery of oil near the La Petrolera site in the late 19th century added to the local economy.

San Cristóbal mixes Andean tradition with a busy commercial life. The San Cristóbal Cathedral stands beside Plaza Juan Maldonado in the historic centre, and the Gothic-style San José Church, built in 1940, is another recognizable landmark. The Táchira Anthropological Museum on Avenida Universidad and the campuses of the Universidad Católica del Táchira and Universidad de Los Andes reflect the city's cultural and educational role in the region.

As a regional hub, San Cristóbal is known for the Feria Internacional de San Sebastián, a major trade, livestock, music and cultural fair held each January. The food scene features Andean staples such as pisca andina, mute and arepas, along with locally produced coffee, while markets, cafés and restaurants are spread across commercial areas such as Barrio Obrero and the centre.

For leisure and business travellers alike, San Cristóbal offers a practical base for exploring the Andean towns, coffee farms and mountain scenery of Táchira, as well as a gateway to cross-border trade and meetings with nearby Cúcuta, Colombia.
