About Zulia
Maracaibo is the capital of Zulia state and the second-largest city in Venezuela, standing on the western shore of the narrow strait that links Lake Maracaibo to the Gulf of Venezuela. Known locally as La Tierra del Sol Amada for its strong sun and hot climate, the city combines a busy commercial character with a strong regional identity shaped by its lake and oil industry.
Founded in the 16th century, Maracaibo grew from a modest port into a major petroleum centre after the early 20th-century oil boom. Its modern skyline and busy port sit alongside reminders of the past, including the colonial-era historic centre, the General Rafael Urdaneta Bridge and monuments linked to independence leader Rafael Urdaneta.
Cultural life in Maracaibo is closely tied to gaita zuliana, a distinctive folk music style especially associated with the Christmas season, and to devotion to Our Lady of Chiquinquirá, known as La Chinita, whose basilica hosts the Feria de la Chinita each November. Visitors can explore Calle Carabobo, the Mercado de Las Pulgas and the waterfront Vereda del Lago park for local crafts, food and everyday city life.
Neighbourhoods such as Bella Vista, with its restaurants, shops and commercial activity along Avenida Bella Vista, contrast with the lakeside areas of El Milagro and Costa Verde, where many hotels and dining options overlook the water. Traditional dishes include patacones, arepas, cazuela marinera, mondongo and fresh fish from the lake.
As an oil, port and commercial hub, Maracaibo attracts business travellers, while its position makes it a gateway to Lake Maracaibo, La Guajira and the Perijá mountains for leisure visitors exploring western Venezuela.
