About Anzoátegui

Barcelona is the capital of Anzoátegui state and one of the main cities on Venezuela's northeastern Caribbean coast. It forms a continuous urban corridor with Puerto La Cruz, Lechería and Guanta, combining a colonial historic centre, an active port and a strong oil and petrochemical economy.

Founded in 1638 by the Spanish explorer Joan Orpí, Barcelona grew as a colonial settlement along the Neverí River. Its history is visible at the Casa Fuerte, a former convent and fortress tied to the 1817 independence battles, and around Plaza Boyacá, where the Catedral de San Cristóbal and other colonial-era buildings frame the old centre.

The city offers several recognisable landmarks and cultural stops, including the Museo Anzoátegui in a restored colonial house, the neoclassical Teatro Cajigal and the central Bulevar 5 de Julio. Nearby Lechería brings a modern waterfront and marina atmosphere, while Puerto La Cruz adds beaches, the Paseo Colón promenade and a lively dining and nightlife scene.

Barcelona is also an important business destination. The wider area hosts the Puerto La Cruz refinery, the José petrochemical complex and one of Venezuela's major port and industrial zones, drawing executives, engineers and logistics travellers to the region.

For leisure and business visitors alike, Barcelona works as a gateway to the beaches and islands of Mochima National Park and to the rest of northeastern Venezuela, with good road links, a regional airport and a coastline of seafood restaurants, beach towns and warm Caribbean weather.
