About Artigas
Artigas is the capital of Artigas Department in far northern Uruguay, a compact border city facing Quaraí in Brazil across the Cuareim River. Known as a gateway to the country's amethyst and agate mining region, it combines a relaxed provincial atmosphere with a practical role as a trade and transit point on the international border.
Founded in 1852 as San Eugenio del Cuareim and later renamed in honour of national hero José Gervasio Artigas, the city grew from a frontier settlement into the administrative centre of Uruguay's northernmost department. Its landmarks include the central Plaza Artigas, the castle-like Jefatura de Policía building declared a National Historic Monument, and the Puente Internacional de la Concordia linking it with Brazil.
Visitors can walk the riverside Parque 7 de Septiembre, explore the main square and surrounding streets, and join a distinctive mining safari that descends into the region's gemstone deposits to see agates and amethysts. The nearby Brazilian town of Quaraí adds a cross-border shopping and cultural dimension that gives Artigas its bilingual, frontier character.
Agriculture, livestock and gemstone mining drive the local economy, while the city serves as a regional hub for services, government and cross-border commerce. Business travellers and leisure visitors use Artigas as a base for exploring northern Uruguay, the gem-producing countryside and the Cuareim River border area.
