About Nukufetau
Nukufetau is a low-lying coral atoll in central Tuvalu, scattered across a broad lagoon with dozens of small islets. Most of the population lives in the village of Savave on Savave islet, giving the atoll a quiet, community-centred island character shaped by fishing, village life and the surrounding ocean.
The atoll has a distinctive history that includes Pacific navigation, missionary-era settlement and a World War II chapter. American forces built an airfield and deepwater wharf on Motulalo islet, and remnants of that period remain visible. Today the atoll combines traditional Tuvaluan culture with modest modern facilities serving its small resident community.
Daily life revolves around the lagoon, the church, the maneapa community hall and subsistence activities such as fishing and coconut farming. The atoll's main landmarks include the village of Savave, the sheltered lagoon and the former airfield site on Motulalo, which resumed domestic air links with Funafuti in 2023.
For travellers, Nukufetau offers a slow-paced, authentic Pacific island experience rather than urban attractions. Visitors typically arrive via Funafuti International Airport and continue by domestic flight or inter-island boat, making it relevant for those interested in Tuvaluan culture, lagoon environments and the country's outer islands.
