About Mary
Mary is the capital of Mary Region in southeastern Turkmenistan and an oasis city on the Murgab River, set against the Karakum Desert. Founded in 1884 as a Russian military and administrative post, it has grown into Turkmenistan's fourth-largest city and a regional centre for cotton and natural gas. Until 1937 the settlement carried the name Merv, reflecting its close connection to the great Silk Road city that lies nearby.
The surrounding history is dominated by Ancient Merv, a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 30 kilometres east of the city. Across a vast archaeological park, visitors can trace walled cities, fortresses, palaces and mausoleums that span more than two millennia of settlement, with the Mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar among the most impressive surviving monuments.
Within Mary itself, the Regional History Museum displays artefacts from Merv and the Bronze Age site of Gonur Depe, while the white-marble Gurbanguly Hajy Mosque and its four minarets anchor the modern centre. The red-brick Pokrovskaya Church recalls the city's Russian Orthodox past, and the lively bazaar offers produce, spices and everyday local life.
As an industrial and transport hub, Mary serves the Murghab oasis and the natural gas and cotton sectors that drive the regional economy. Mary International Airport links the city with Ashgabat and other domestic destinations, making it a practical base for exploring the southeast.
For travellers, Mary works best as a gateway to Silk Road archaeology and the desert-oasis landscape. Leisure visitors come primarily for Merv and Gonur Depe, while business travellers pass through for regional industry and administration; both find a compact, walkable centre with essential services and an unhurried pace.
