About Daşoguz

Daşoguz is the administrative capital of Daşoguz Region in northern Turkmenistan, near the border with Uzbekistan. It is a compact regional city and the main gateway to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Kunya-Urgench, one of the most important centres of the ancient Khorezm region.

Known until 1992 as Tashauz and later as Dashkhovuz, the city has long served as a market and transport hub on the northern edge of Turkmenistan. Its modern layout was shaped during the Soviet period, when it became the administrative and agricultural centre of the surrounding irrigated cotton-growing area.

The main attraction near Daşoguz is the Kunya-Urgench State Historical and Cultural Reserve, about 90 kilometres northwest of the city. Its monuments include the Turabek Khanym Mausoleum, the 60-metre Kutlug-Timur Minaret and the mausoleum of Sufi teacher Najmeddin Kubra, reflecting the region's medieval Islamic heritage. In the city itself, the bagshy museum honours local musicians and the dutar tradition.

As a regional centre, Daşoguz combines government offices, a railway station, a bazaar and domestic airport connections with Ashgabat. The city was named Cultural Capital of the CIS in 2016, highlighting its role in Turkmen cultural life.

For travellers, Daşoguz serves as a practical base for exploring Kunya-Urgench and the northern Khorezm landscape, while business visitors come for agriculture, trade and regional administration. Its quiet streets, markets and proximity to major Silk Road monuments make it a distinctive stop in northern Turkmenistan.
