About Sinop
Sinop is a compact Black Sea port city on the Boztepe Peninsula in northern Turkey, close to İnceburun, the northernmost point of the country. Known for its sea walls, working harbour and unhurried coastal rhythm, it combines maritime heritage with green headlands, beaches and a small, walkable historic centre.
Founded as the ancient Greek colony of Sinope, the city grew into an important Pontic port and is remembered as the birthplace of the philosopher Diogenes. Its layered past is visible in the Sinop Fortress walls, the 13th-century Alaeddin Mosque, the Pervane Medrese and the former Sinop Fortress Prison, now a museum, while the Archaeological Museum displays rich local finds.
The historic core clusters around the harbour inside the old walls. Nearby natural attractions include Hamsilos Fjord, often described as Turkey's only fjord, the sandy Akliman and Karakum beaches, Sarıkum Lake and the Erfelek Tatlıca Waterfalls; a short drive west leads to the İnceburun lighthouse.
Fishing, shipbuilding and small-scale industry anchor the local economy, with tourism expanding gradually. The food scene centres on Black Sea fish, hamsi (anchovy), Sinop mantı dumplings and the sweet local nokul pastry, served in harbourside restaurants and tea gardens.
For leisure visitors, Sinop offers history, beaches and nature without large crowds; for business and event travellers, it is a calm, walkable base reached through Sinop Airport. Its blend of ancient landmarks and coastal scenery makes it a distinctive, low-key Black Sea destination.

Sinop Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Late spring to early autumn (roughly May to September) is the best period for sightseeing, beaches and nature trips around Hamsilos Fjord and İnceburun. Summer offers the warmest swimming conditions at Akliman and Karakum, while September brings quieter days and mild coastal weather.
How to Get Around
The compact historic centre is easy to explore on foot, and municipal buses and dolmuş minibuses connect the centre with beaches and nearby attractions. Taxis are available, while a rental car is the most flexible option for reaching Hamsilos, İnceburun and the Erfelek waterfalls.
Where to Stay
Stay in or near the harbour and old town for easy walking access to the fortress, museum, restaurants and the sea. Small hotels and guesthouses suit most budgets, and quieter coastal options near Akliman are convenient for beach-focused stays.
Food & Drink
Black Sea flavours dominate, with fresh fish and hamsi (anchovy) at harbourside restaurants, plus Sinop mantı dumplings and the sweet nokul pastry. Tea gardens, small cafés and local dairy products such as kaymak round out the city's modest but distinctive food scene.
