About Siirt
Siirt is a compact city in southeastern Turkey and the capital of Siirt Province, set among rugged valleys and pistachio-growing hills near the Botan River. Its long history, stone architecture and strong regional cuisine give it a distinctly local character rather than a heavily touristed feel.
The city's identity stretches back thousands of years, with evidence of settlement at nearby Güsir Mound and a heritage shaped by Mesopotamian, Seljuk and Ottoman influences. Landmarks include the 12th-century Ulu Mosque, the restored Clock Tower and the rock-carved cas houses that line parts of the old centre.
Tillo, a short drive from the centre, is Siirt's best-known excursion. The Tomb of İsmail Fakirullah and its light-refraction mechanism, the tombs of İbrahim Hakkı and other scholars, and the Sultan Memduh Cisterns draw many visitors, while Botan Valley National Park offers dramatic canyon views and walking routes.
Siirt's food culture is a major reason to visit, centred on büryan kebabı, perde pilavı, Siirt pistachios and Pervari honey. The bazaar is the place to try local produce and shop for bıttım soap and Siirt blankets.
For travellers, Siirt works as a base for exploring the province's history and landscapes, with Siirt Airport providing domestic connections and the city's small centre concentrating hotels, restaurants and transport links.

Siirt Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Spring, especially April to June, and autumn from September to November offer the most comfortable weather for exploring Siirt and its surrounding valleys. Summers can be very hot, often exceeding 35°C, while winters are cold and may bring snow.
How to Get Around
Siirt's compact centre can be explored on foot, with local minibuses and taxis covering the city and nearby districts such as Tillo and Kurtalan. A rental car or private driver is useful for reaching Botan Valley and other rural sights.
Where to Stay
Most accommodation is in the city centre near the government building, bazaar and Ulu Mosque, where transport and restaurants are easy to reach. Tillo offers a quieter base for visitors focused on its historic tombs, though options are more limited.
Food & Drink
Try büryan kebabı, a slow-cooked pit-roasted lamb or goat dish, and perde pilavı, a pastry-wrapped rice dish, alongside Siirt pistachios and Pervari honey. The central bazaar is a good place to sample local foods and buy bıttım soap or Siirt blankets.
