About Samsun
Samsun is the largest city and busiest port on Turkey's Black Sea coast, serving as the capital of Samsun Province. Its long seaside promenade, sandy beaches and wide boulevards give the city a relaxed coastal character, while its role as a regional trade and university centre keeps it lively throughout the year.
The city has deep historical roots. Founded as Amisos by Milesian settlers around 750 BC, Samsun is best known in modern Turkey as the place where Mustafa Kemal Atatürk landed on 19 May 1919 to launch the Turkish War of Independence. That moment is remembered at the Bandırma Ship Museum, the Atatürk Monument and the Gazi Museum, where he stayed.
Central İlkadım holds the harbour, historic buildings and several museums, while Atakum is the modern district of beaches, cafés, university life and the long coastal promenade. Nearby, the Amazon Village and Amisos Hill burial mound reflect the area's ancient Amazon and Pontic heritage, and the Kızılırmak Delta Bird Sanctuary offers wetlands and birdwatching a short drive away.
Samsun is also an important economic centre. Its port is the largest on Turkey's Black Sea coast, and the surrounding plains of Bafra and Çarşamba support agriculture including tobacco and hazelnuts. Ondokuz Mayıs University, healthcare facilities, trade fairs and the modern tram line add to the city's business and event infrastructure.
For travellers, Samsun combines a Black Sea beach break with history, local food and a working commercial city. Leisure visitors come for the coast, museums and green surroundings, while business travellers use the airport, port and hotels for trade, conferences and regional travel.
