About Nevşehir
Nevşehir is a compact city in central Turkey and the capital of Nevşehir Province, widely used as the gateway to Cappadocia. Its setting among volcanic valleys, tuff rock formations and surrounding villages gives the city a calm, provincial atmosphere that contrasts with the busier tourist centres of Göreme and Ürgüp.
The region's history reaches back to the Hittites and later became an important early Christian area, visible today in rock-cut churches, monasteries and underground settlements. In the city itself, the hilltop Nevşehir Castle and the restored Kayaşehir rock settlement overlook the older streets, while the 18th-century Damat İbrahim Paşa complex reflects Ottoman-era architecture.
Cappadocia's main experiences lie within short drives of the centre: the Göreme Open-Air Museum and its frescoed cave churches, the fairy chimneys of Paşabağ and Devrent Valley, panoramic Uçhisar Castle, the pottery workshops of Avanos and the underground cities of Derinkuyu and Kaymaklı. Hot air balloon flights at sunrise remain the region's signature activity.
Local life centres on markets, family restaurants and workshops producing pottery, carpets and wine from regional grapes. The city also serves as an administrative and commercial hub for the province, with links to Kayseri and other Central Anatolian centres, while tourism supports hotels, agencies, guiding and transport services.
For travellers, Nevşehir works as both a practical base and a starting point: it offers city hotels and transport connections near Cappadocia's valleys, and its airport, Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport, places the main sights within roughly 30–45 minutes by road. Leisure visitors come for landscapes, history and ballooning, while business and event travellers can reach the region's hotels and venues with straightforward transfers.
