Kahramanmaraş

Kahramanmaraş is a historic city in southern Turkey and the capital of Kahramanmaraş Province, best known as the home of Turkey's famous stretchy dondurma ice cream and as a busy textile and food-processing centre. The city spreads across the foothills of Mount Ahır, with the Ceyhan River to the east and the Taurus Mountains rising to the north, giving it a setting that mixes Mediterranean warmth with highland character.

Settlement in the area reaches back to the Hittite period, and the city was known in antiquity as Marqas and later as Germanicia Caesarea. Seljuk, Dulkadir and Ottoman layers survive in landmarks such as Kahramanmaraş Castle, the Ulu Mosque, the Taş Medrese and the historic covered bazaar. The city earned its present name after its resistance during the Turkish War of Independence, and rebuilding after the February 2023 earthquakes has become part of its recent story.

The central districts of Dulkadiroğlu and Onikişubat hold most visitor attractions. Around the castle and old bazaar, travellers can visit the Kahramanmaraş Archaeology Museum, the Germanicia Mosaic Site, the Yedi Güzel Adam Literature Museum and the Dondurma (Ice Cream) Museum. For nature, Başkonuş Plateau, Döngel Cave and the Yedikuyular Ski Resort offer nearby escapes from the city.

Textile production, metalwork, food manufacturing and agriculture anchor the local economy, and internationally known ice cream brands such as MADO started here. The goldsmiths' bazaar and copper workshops keep traditional crafts visible, while the regional cuisine centres on Maraş dondurma, tarhana soup and local pastries.

For travellers, Kahramanmaraş works well as a base for exploring southeastern Anatolia's history, cuisine and mountain scenery. Business visitors come for the textile and manufacturing sectors, while leisure travellers are drawn by the bazaars, museums, ski resort and the chance to taste authentic Maraş ice cream in its home city.
