About Pemba South
Pemba South is the southern region of Pemba Island, part of the Zanzibar Archipelago off mainland Tanzania. Known for its green, fertile hills, clove plantations and quiet coastal villages, it feels far removed from the busier tourist hubs of Unguja and is often called part of the 'Green Island'.
The region's history is rooted in Indian Ocean trade, Omani influence and the spice economy. Cloves remain central to local life, and visitors can see harvesting and drying in plantation areas. Historic sites such as the ruins at Ras Mkumbuu and the coastal settlement of Pujini reflect the island's Swahili and trading heritage.
Chake Chake is the main town, with a lively market, administrative buildings and easy access to Pemba Airport. Mkoani, the regional capital, is an important port where ferries and dhows arrive and where the daily fish market offers a close-up view of island life. Offshore, Misali Island and the Pemba Channel are known for healthy coral reefs, clear water, snorkelling and diving.
Beyond fishing and small-scale farming, cloves and other spices drive much of the local economy, while small lodges and dive operations serve a growing number of eco-tourists. The island appeals to travellers looking for marine life, local culture and a slower pace than Zanzibar City.
Pemba South suits visitors who want an authentic, low-key Indian Ocean experience, whether for diving, spice tours, cultural walks or simply exploring rural Zanzibar away from the crowds.

Best Time to Visit
The driest months from June to October and December to February are generally best for beach time, diving and sightseeing. Heavy rains from March to May can make some rural roads muddy and reduce visibility for snorkelling and diving.
