About Mtwara

Mtwara is a coastal city in southeastern Tanzania and the capital of Mtwara Region, close to the border with Mozambique. It faces the Indian Ocean and grew around a deep-water port built during the British colonial period, giving it a laid-back working harbour atmosphere combined with Swahili coastal culture.

The city's modern identity is tied to the Tanganyika Groundnut Scheme of the late 1940s and 1950s, when the British developed Mtwara as a planned port town for exporting groundnuts. Although the scheme failed, the port, grid-like streets and old Indian trading houses along Aga Khan Street remain reminders of that era.

Nearby Mikindani is the historic heart of the area, with narrow lanes and coral stone buildings showing Swahili, Arab and Indian influences. Visitors also come for Shangani Beach, the busy central market and fish market, and Mnazi Bay-Ruvuma Estuary Marine Park, which protects coral reefs, mangroves and coastal waters.

Mtwara is an important regional centre for cashew production and trade, and its port supports commerce with southern Tanzania and northern Mozambique. Offshore natural gas exploration and related activity have added a business dimension to the local economy.

For leisure travellers, Mtwara offers quieter coastal scenery, diving and dhow trips, while business travellers are drawn by the port, agriculture and energy sectors. The mix of Swahili heritage, marine attractions and regional trade makes it a distinctive southern Tanzanian destination.
