About River Nile
Atbara is a railway and trading town in northeastern Sudan, set where the Nile receives the Atbara River, its last major tributary. Known across Sudan as the Railway City, it grew around British-era railway workshops and remains closely tied to its industrial past.
The town's railway heritage is visible in its original station, historic workshops and the dome-shaped houses built for railway workers, while the Sudan Railways Museum preserves locomotives and rolling stock. At the meeting point of the two rivers, the Nile continues north without further tributaries, giving Atbara a distinctive place in the region's geography.
Markets, cafés and bus and rail connections make Atbara a practical regional hub. South of the town, the Meroë pyramids and related archaeological sites are among Sudan's best-known attractions, and the Fifth Cataract area lies close by for travellers exploring the river.
For business visitors, Atbara remains a centre for rail, services and regional trade, while leisure travellers use it as a base for the Nile, Meroë and northern Sudan. Its compact layout and railway character set it apart from larger Nile towns.
