About South Darfur

Nyala is the capital of South Darfur state in southwestern Sudan and one of Darfur's most important commercial centres. Its name comes from the Daju language and means "the place of chatting", reflecting its long role as a meeting and trading point.

The city has deep roots in the region's history. Nyala was once a capital of the Daju Empire around Jebel Um-Kurdós and later developed under the Fur Sultanate, before British administrators laid out the modern town centre in the early 1920s. Today the central market, Nyala Grand Mosque and Nyala University anchor daily life, while the Darfur Community Museum preserves regional heritage.

Nyala is a key hub for trade in gum arabic, livestock and local produce, and it serves as the western terminus of Sudan's railway network. A domestic airport, Nyala Airport, links the city with Khartoum and other parts of Sudan, and roads connect it with the wider Darfur region.

Neighbourhoods around the market and the older Hai Al-Wadi area show the city's layered growth, from its colonial-era core to newer residential and displaced-person settlements on the outskirts. Darfur's years of conflict have brought many displaced people to camps near the city, making Nyala an important humanitarian centre.

For travellers, Nyala is primarily a business, aid and transit destination rather than a classic tourist stop. Visitors come for government, NGO and commercial work, with the nearby Jebel Marra highlands offering a striking natural contrast. Anyone travelling here should follow current security advice and use trusted local transport.
