About East Darfur
Ed Daein (El Daein) is the capital of East Darfur State in southwestern Sudan, roughly 831 km southwest of Khartoum. It is a trading and administrative centre at the crossroads of the Darfur region, known for livestock, groundnuts, cereals and local market activity. The town's grid-like layout and surrounding savanna give it a distinctive small-city character on the edge of Darfur.
Founded in the 18th and 19th centuries by the Rizeigat tribe under Barsham (Haskanet) bin Abd al-Hamid, Ed Daein grew around tribal settlement and trade. Its history includes Rizeigat involvement in the Mahdist movement in the 1880s and long-standing rivalries with neighbouring Fur and Dinka communities. In 2012 it became the capital of the newly created East Darfur State, and since 2023 it has been affected by Sudan's ongoing conflict.
The city functions as a hub for local trade in wheat, groundnuts, barley and livestock, with rail links toward Khartoum and Nyala. Key landmarks include the Grand Mosque of El Daein and the Wadi Ed Daein area, while markets and neighbourhoods reflect both Arab and local Darfuri traditions.
As a regional administrative and commercial centre, Ed Daein serves business and official travel within East Darfur, as well as humanitarian and transit movements across southwestern Sudan. Its airport, Ed Daein Airport (ADV), supports limited domestic air access.
For travellers, Ed Daein offers a practical base for understanding Darfur's savanna landscapes, local markets and community life, though infrastructure and security conditions require careful planning.
