Zalingei

Zalingei is the capital of Central Darfur state in western Sudan, set in the fertile valley of the seasonal Wadi Azum river near the Jebel Marra highlands. Its position between the volcanic Jebel Marra range and the semi-arid savannah gives it a distinctive character, with orchards, seasonal streams and a role as an administrative and trading centre for the surrounding region.

The town's growth is closely tied to the history of Darfur. Zalingei served for generations as a local administrative and market centre, and in 2012 it became the capital of the newly created Central Darfur state. Traditional Fur leadership and the nearby Jebel Marra massif remain central to the town's identity.

The University of Zalingei, founded in 1994, brings students and academic activity to the town. Local markets trade cereals, livestock, gum arabic, fruit and vegetables, and Zalingei functions as a transit point on routes toward Nyala and El Geneina. Weekly markets, crafts and the surrounding farm and orchard landscape reflect everyday life in the region.

The main draw for visitors is the Jebel Marra area, known for waterfalls, crater lakes and terraced farms, along with the Wadi Azum valley and nearby villages. Access is usually arranged through local guides, and travel requires up-to-date security information because conditions in Darfur can change. Zalingei's market streets, university quarter and green valley setting give it a character quite different from larger cities such as Khartoum or Nyala.

For business and aid travellers, Zalingei serves as a base for organisations working in Central Darfur, and its airport connects the town to regional flights. The combination of administrative functions, agriculture, education and gateway access to Jebel Marra makes it relevant both for practical travel and for those interested in western Sudan's landscapes and cultures.
