About Free State

Bloemfontein is South Africa's judicial capital and the capital of the Free State province, sitting on the southern edge of the Highveld at roughly 1,400 metres above sea level. Known as the City of Roses, it combines a calm, tree-lined character with real legal and administrative importance as home to the Supreme Court of Appeal.

Founded in 1846 as a British outpost under Major Henry Douglas Warden, the city grew into the capital of the Orange Free State Republic and later the Orange River Colony. J.R.R. Tolkien was born here in 1892, and the 1899 Bloemfontein Conference took place in the city shortly before the Second Boer War. The National Women's Monument and Anglo-Boer War Museum commemorate that conflict's human cost.

Historic landmarks include the sandstone Fourth Raadsaal, the Old Presidency and the Supreme Court of Appeal, while Naval Hill offers city views, a nature reserve and a statue of Nelson Mandela. The Free State National Botanical Garden, Oliewenhuis Art Museum and Loch Logan Waterfront add green space, art and retail to the central area.

Beyond the centre, neighbourhoods such as Westdene, Universitas, Dan Pienaar and Langenhoven Park provide shopping, dining and accommodation, while the Mangaung township carries deep political heritage as the birthplace of the organisation that became the ANC. Rugby at Toyota Stadium, the annual rose festival and a growing café scene give the city year-round energy.

As a transport and services hub for the central interior, Bloemfontein links the N1 and N8 corridors and supports government, education, healthcare and agriculture. It offers an easy, unhurried base for leisure travellers exploring the Free State and for business visitors engaged with the region's courts, universities and commerce.
