About North Western
The North West Province is one of Sierra Leone's five administrative regions, stretching along the country's northwestern coast and the Guinea border. Created in 2017, it brings together the districts of Kambia, Karene and Port Loko, with Port Loko as its capital. The region is a gateway between Freetown and the northern countryside, and it is home to Freetown International Airport at Lungi.
The area's history is closely tied to trade along the Port Loko River and the Temne people, who form the majority population. Port Loko takes its name from the Loko people and grew as a trading settlement, later becoming a centre for bauxite mining and commerce. Around Lunsar, the largest town in Port Loko District, iron ore mining at Marampa has long shaped the local economy.
Natural attractions are the province's strongest draw. The Rokel River, Sierra Leone's largest river, forms waterfalls near Lunsar, while Occra Hills Forest Reserve protects forested highlands close to Port Loko town. Coastal creeks, mangrove-lined estuaries and river communities offer a quieter view of rural Sierra Leone away from the capital.
Port Loko's market, riverside setting and historic trading atmosphere give visitors a sense of everyday provincial life. Lunsar adds a lively sporting identity through the Tour de Lunsar, the country's largest annual cycling event, and a backdrop of green hills and mine country.
For travellers, the province combines practical importance with understated appeal. Business visitors come for mining, trade and agriculture, while leisure travellers use it as a base for waterfalls, forest walks and the route to or from Lungi airport and Freetown.
