About Northern
Makeni is the largest city in Sierra Leone's Northern Province and the capital of Bombali District. Located about 180 kilometres northeast of Freetown on the road toward Kabala, it is the commercial and administrative heart of the north, with a busy central market, a growing hospitality sector and a slower pace than the capital.
The city grew as a trading settlement linked to merchants from the Fouta Djallon region of present-day Guinea. The Temne people form the dominant community, and the Makeni Cotton Tree in the city centre remains a long-standing symbol of unity where Temne chiefs once gathered. Gara tie-dyeing is a well-known local craft, while the University of Makeni has made the city an important centre for higher education in the north.
Central Makeni is built around the main market, Station Road and Campbell Street. Notable landmarks include Wusum Hill, the Makeni Cotton Tree and Wusum Stadium, and visitors can explore the University of Makeni campus, the city's churches and mosques, and craft workshops producing Gara textiles.
Makeni's economy centres on trade, agriculture and services, with market stalls, Gara textiles and motorcycle taxis shaping daily life. Local food includes cassava leaf with rice, groundnut soup and grilled meats, and the city offers a practical range of hotels, guesthouses and restaurants along the Azzolini Highway and near the centre.
For travellers, Makeni is a convenient stop on the Freetown–Kabala road and a gateway to the Northern Province. It suits business visitors with provincial interests as well as leisure travellers seeking markets, local culture and road connections to the northern countryside.
