About Southern
Bo is the second largest city of Sierra Leone and the administrative capital of the Southern Province and Bo District. It is an important regional trading and educational centre, with the Mende people forming the largest ethnic community.
Bo grew as a trading and administrative centre during the colonial era, when the former government railway connected the city with Freetown and the interior. Historic institutions such as Bo Government Secondary School, opened in 1906, and landmarks including the Bo Clock Tower reflect the city's long civic role.
The central market is the commercial heart of the city, while Bo Stadium, the Clock Tower and the nearby Njala University campus are among the best-known local landmarks. Day trips from Bo lead to the Kangari Hills Forest Reserve and Tiwai Island Wildlife Sanctuary in the Moa River.
As a hub for the Southern Province, Bo handles trade in rice, palm oil, coffee, cocoa and other agricultural produce. The city offers a compact network of guesthouses, restaurants, markets and a modest nightlife scene that has grown with its role as a regional business centre.
For travellers, Bo is a practical base for exploring southern Sierra Leone and a stop on the road between Freetown and the eastern provinces. Its markets, educational institutions and surrounding natural areas appeal to both business visitors and independent travellers.
