About Lungi International Airport
Lungi International Airport is Sierra Leone's only international airport and the main gateway to the capital Freetown. It sits at Lungi on the northern side of the Sierra Leone River estuary, directly opposite the city, and handles both international and regional traffic.
The airport has long served as the country's primary air hub; its site was established as a British Royal Air Force base before becoming Freetown's airport in the late 1940s. A modern passenger terminal opened in March 2023, replacing an older facility and improving check-in, arrivals and security areas.
Because the airport is separated from Freetown by the estuary, travellers complete the journey by ferry, water taxi or a much longer road route around the estuary. Water crossings typically take around 30 to 45 minutes, while the road journey via Port Loko can take several hours.
Despite its unusual location, the airport remains the key entry point for visitors to Freetown, the Freetown Peninsula beaches and destinations across Sierra Leone, with onward transport continuing by road from the city.
