About Madinat ash Shamal
Madinat ash Shamal is the northernmost town in Qatar and the administrative centre of Al Shamal municipality, sitting on the northern coast of the Persian Gulf about 100 kilometres north of Doha. Its Arabic name means "City of the North", and the town was founded in the 1970s after Qatar gained independence, developing as a planned residential and municipal hub.
The town itself is quiet and low-rise, but the surrounding area holds much of northern Qatar's history. The UNESCO-listed Al Zubarah archaeological site and its 1938 fort preserve an 18th-century pearl-trading settlement, while the Al Jassasiya rock carvings, Al Thaqab Fort and Al Rakiyat Fort add layers of desert and coastal heritage.
Nearby, the old fishing village of Ar Ru'ays and beaches such as Fuwairit, Al Ghariya and Abu Dhalouf offer a slower coastal experience. Fuwairit Beach is known as a hawksbill turtle nesting site in season, and the wider coast combines sand, shallow turquoise water and desert scenery.
Madinat ash Shamal works best as a gateway rather than a big-city destination. Most visitors come from Doha for heritage day trips, beach stops, birdwatching or quiet driving routes, while local cafés and restaurants serve simple Qatari and Middle Eastern food, often with fresh Gulf seafood.
For leisure travelers it offers an uncrowded look at Qatar's northern landscape, and for business visitors it is a convenient base for municipal, port or energy-related work in the region, with Doha's international connections about an hour and a half away by road.
