About Callao
Callao is Peru's principal seaport and the country's maritime gateway, located on the Pacific coast immediately west of Lima and part of the Lima metropolitan area. As a constitutional province with its own regional government, it combines a working port, naval heritage, seafood traditions and coastal neighbourhoods into one of Peru's most distinctive urban areas.
Founded in 1537, Callao grew as the port serving the Spanish colonial capital of Lima. Its landmark Real Felipe Fortress was built in the 18th century to defend the harbour, and the historic centre known as Callao Monumental preserves colonial and republican buildings alongside museums, galleries and street art. The Naval Museum, the Abtao submarine and seafront plazas reflect the city's long connection to the sea.
The peninsula district of La Punta offers beaches, a seafront promenade and relaxed seafood restaurants, while Chucuito is a traditional fishing quarter known for its colourful wooden houses. The central Callao district holds the historic core, and residential areas such as Bellavista, La Perla and Ventanilla extend the urban fabric along the coast.
Callao is Peru's main logistics and trade hub: the Port of Callao handles most of the country's maritime cargo, and Jorge Chávez International Airport is located within the province. Its food culture centres on ceviche and fresh seafood, and annual events such as the Señor del Mar festival and local carnivals add to the city's calendar.
For visitors, Callao offers historic architecture, coastal dining and boat trips to the Palomino Islands to see sea lions, while business travellers are drawn by port, logistics and trade activity. Its position beside Lima makes it an easy gateway for both short stays and extended exploration of the Peruvian coast.

Callao Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
Summer, from December to April, brings warmer, sunnier weather and is the best season for La Punta's beaches, seafront walks and boat trips to the Palomino Islands. From May to November the coast is cooler and often overcast, but the historic centre and museums remain comfortable to explore.
How to Get Around
Taxis and ride-hailing apps are the most practical way to move between Callao's districts, and local buses and combis connect the province with greater Lima. La Punta and the Callao Monumental area are compact enough to explore on foot, while the airport is a short drive from central Callao.
Where to Stay
La Punta is the most popular base for a relaxed coastal stay near seafood restaurants and the promenade, while the area around Callao Monumental suits travellers focused on history and culture. Hotels near Jorge Chávez International Airport are convenient for early flights, and many visitors also stay in Lima's Miraflores and visit Callao as a day trip.
Food & Drink
Callao is one of Peru's leading destinations for ceviche and fresh seafood, with cebicherías concentrated along La Punta's Malecón Pardo and in the fishing quarter of Chucuito. Look for leche de tigre, jalea, arroz con mariscos and chicharrón de calamar at traditional and modern seafood restaurants.
