About Sandaun
Vanimo is the capital of Sandaun (West Sepik) Province and sits on a peninsula along Papua New Guinea's remote northwestern coast, about 32 kilometres from the Indonesian border. The town combines a relaxed coastal pace with its role as the province's administrative and commercial centre, framed by tropical beaches, a sheltered harbour and dense rainforest.
Its harbour location made Vanimo a practical choice as provincial capital, and the town remains a gateway for border trade, timber and government activity. Vanimo is also the seat of a Catholic diocese, and the surrounding region is culturally diverse, with many local language groups living in and beyond the town.
Most visitors spend time around Vanimo Beach and the town's calm shoreline, while surfers head to breaks such as Lido Village and Waromo. Other local highlights include a distinctive rock formation known as the Arches, a nearby waterfall, coastal fishing and the lively town market, where produce, fish and goods from both sides of the border are traded.
As the main service centre for Sandaun Province, Vanimo supports logging, government administration, mission work and cross-border commerce. Air Niugini and other regional flights link Vanimo Airport to Port Moresby and other PNG centres, while the road to the Wutung border post connects the town with Jayapura in neighbouring Indonesia.
For travellers, Vanimo offers a quieter, nature-focused alternative to larger Pacific destinations, with practical appeal for surfers, divers, researchers, missionaries and business visitors working in the region.
