About Manus

Manus is Papua New Guinea's smallest province, a scattered group of islands in the Admiralty Islands at the northern edge of the country. Its main settlement, Lorengau, sits on the coast of Seeadler Harbour on Manus Island and serves as a quiet hub for village life, markets and government services.

The islands carry strong Second World War history. The Admiralty Islands campaign left airstrips, wrecks and memorials, including Momote Memorial Park near the airport on Los Negros Island. Lorengau's waterfront and harbour remain central to daily life, while coral atolls and clear offshore waters define the surrounding seascape.

Visitors can explore the Lorengau Market, Loniu Cave, the Lorengau River and nearby islands such as Koruniat. Traditional garamut drumming and Manus dance performances, along with village visits, reveal a culture shaped by the sea, fishing and island trade rather than large-scale urban development.

The local economy is built on fishing, copra and small-scale commerce, with a free-trade zone and the Lombrum naval base in the wider province. Tourism facilities are modest but growing, with small hotels, lodges and guesthouses concentrated in and around Lorengau.

For leisure and business travellers, Manus offers a low-key Pacific island experience reached by domestic flights to Momote Airport, followed by a short causeway transfer into Lorengau and onward boat or road travel to outlying communities.

Manus Travel Guide

Best Time to Visit

The drier months from May to October are generally the most comfortable for visiting Manus, with calmer seas for boat trips, snorkeling and diving. Rain is more frequent from around November to April, when weather can affect flights and travel between islands.

How to Get Around

Most visitors arrive at Momote Airport on Los Negros Island and travel by shuttle, PMV bus or pre-arranged transfer across the causeway to Lorengau. The town is compact enough to walk, while boats and PMV vehicles are the main ways to reach villages, beaches and nearby islands.

Where to Stay

Lorengau has a small selection of hotels, lodges and guesthouses, including waterfront options on Seeadler Harbour such as Harbourside Hotel and Seeadler Bay Hotel. Staying near the town centre gives convenient access to the market, waterfront and local transport.

Food & Drink

Local food centres on fresh seafood such as reef fish, tuna, mackerel, crab and lobster, often served at guesthouses and hotels. Lorengau Market and small eateries offer local staples, tropical fruit and simple Papua New Guinean dishes.
