About Northern
Gulu is the largest city and main commercial centre of Northern Uganda, serving as the administrative hub of Gulu District and the wider Acholi sub-region. Its markets, university and location on the main road toward South Sudan give the city a busy, forward-looking character.
The city grew from a trading and garrison settlement into a key regional centre, but decades of conflict in northern Uganda left a strong mark on its recent history. Today Gulu is rebuilding and expanding, with modern businesses, banks and transport links alongside a deeply rooted Acholi cultural identity.
Key landmarks include St. Joseph's Cathedral, the Independence Monument, Gulu Main Market and Gulu University. Nearby cultural sites, craft workshops and local markets offer visitors a practical introduction to everyday life and traditions in the region.
Neighbourhoods such as the central market area, the university district in Laroo and quieter residential zones in Layibi and Bardege each have a different atmosphere. As a base for trade, NGO activity and regional meetings, Gulu combines practical business infrastructure with a calmer, smaller-city alternative to Kampala.

Northern Travel Guide
Best Time to Visit
The drier months from December to February and June to August are generally the most comfortable for exploring Gulu and travelling on regional roads. Rainy periods from March to May and September to November can make some routes muddy but keep the surrounding countryside green.
How to Get Around
Boda-boda motorcycle taxis, shared minibus taxis and special hire cars are common ways to move around Gulu. The central area is walkable, while a rental car or private driver is useful for trips to nearby villages, attractions and longer regional journeys.
Where to Stay
Hotels and guesthouses around the city centre, Elizabeth Road and Upper Churchill Drive put visitors close to the main market, restaurants and offices. Quieter options in Laroo, Layibi and Bardege offer a more residential feel, while some lodges on the city edge provide gardens and open space.
Food & Drink
Gulu's food scene features Acholi staples such as millet bread, greens with groundnut paste and grilled meat alongside Ugandan and international dishes. The main market, local cafés and small restaurants serve fresh produce, tea and budget-friendly meals throughout the city.
