About Akwa Ibom
Uyo is the capital of Akwa Ibom State in Nigeria's oil-rich South South region, combining a planned, green centre with rapid commercial growth. As the administrative heart of the Land of Promise, the city mixes government institutions, expanding business districts and a growing aviation and hospitality scene.
Uyo became the state capital on 23 September 1987, when Akwa Ibom was created from the former Cross River State. The city is a centre of Ibibio, Annang and Oron culture, reflected in local languages, festivals, crafts and cuisine, while English remains the official language.
Modern landmarks shape much of the skyline, including the 21-storey Dakkada Tower, the whale-shaped International Christian Worship Centre, Ibom Plaza, Udo Udoma Unity Park and the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium, known as the Nest of Champions. The University of Uyo and the Ibom Tropicana Entertainment Centre add to the city's civic and cultural life.
Beyond the centre, visitors can reach Ibeno Beach, often described as West Africa's longest beach, and the historic town of Ikot Abasi with its Amalgamation House and slave-era sites such as the Bridge of No Return. This makes Uyo a practical base for exploring the coast and Akwa Ibom's colonial history.
Uyo is also a business and events hub for the Niger Delta, with oil and gas activity, the state-owned carrier Ibom Air, conferences and sporting fixtures attracting both leisure and business travellers. Restaurants serve local dishes such as afang and edikang ikong, while hotels and shopping areas cluster around Wellington Bassey Way, IBB Avenue and Ewet Housing.
