About Hardap

Mariental is the administrative capital of Namibia's Hardap Region, a small desert town in the south-central part of the country that grew up along the railway and the B1 national road. Set on the Fish River roughly 274 km southeast of Windhoek, it serves as a practical gateway between the central highlands, the Kalahari and Namibia's south.

The town was founded in 1912 as a railway stop between Windhoek and Keetmanshoop and named after Maria, wife of the area's first colonial settler, Hermann Brandt. Proclaimed a town in 1920, Mariental keeps a modest, working character shaped by farming, rail and irrigation rather than mass tourism.

Its defining attraction is the nearby Hardap Dam, Namibia's largest reservoir, completed in 1962 about 24 km from town. Around the dam, the Hardap Recreation Resort and Game Reserve offer game drives, birdwatching, freshwater angling, boating and hiking trails, with wildlife including antelope and zebra.

Mariental is also an agricultural and food-production centre. The Hardap Irrigation Scheme grows lucerne, maize, wheat, grapes and fruit, while large dairy and piggery operations supply milk and pork to much of Namibia. The surrounding region is home to Nama communities, and Afrikaans and Khoekhoegowab are widely heard alongside English.

For travellers, Mariental is a useful stopover and base for exploring the Hardap Dam, the Fish River and Kalahari scenery, offering guesthouses, lodges, fuel and supplies on the long B1 route through central Namibia.
