About Nampula
Nampula is the capital of Nampula Province and Mozambique's third-largest city, set among granite outcrops and plains in the country's north. As the region's main commercial, transport and administrative centre, it combines a busy trading character with growing business activity along the Nacala Logistics Corridor.
The city's landmarks reflect its colonial and post-independence layers. The twin-towered Cathedral of Our Lady of Fatima anchors the centre, while the National Ethnology Museum displays Makonde masks, carvings and musical instruments, with a cooperative workshop where woodcarvers work nearby. A central mosque close to the cathedral highlights the city's religious diversity.
Around the centre, neighbourhoods such as Muhala, Muatala, Namicopo and Napipine give Nampula a distinctly local rhythm, while Waresta Market, the largest wholesale market in northern Mozambique, draws traders from across the region. About 200 km east on the coast, the UNESCO-listed Ilha de Moçambique offers the Fort of São Sebastião, old coral and stone buildings, and a very different heritage atmosphere.
Nampula's economy is anchored in trade, agriculture such as cashew and cotton, and its position on the railway linking Nacala's deep-water port with Malawi and the interior. Business visitors are drawn by logistics, agribusiness and regional events, while the food scene features matapa, xima, grilled chicken, seafood and local cashew nuts.
For travellers, Nampula serves as a practical gateway to northern Mozambique's coast and heritage sites, offering a mix of commerce, culture and transport connections that matters to both leisure visitors and business trips.
