About Tinghir

Tinghir, also written Tinerhir, is a market town in southeastern Morocco where the palm-lined Todgha Valley narrows toward the cliffs of Todra Gorge. It sits within the Drâa-Tafilalet region and is best known as the gateway to the gorge, one of Morocco's most dramatic canyons.

The town grew up beside the Todgha River around an oasis of date palms, olive trees and small garden plots. Its old quarter, the ksar of Aït El Haj Ali, and the nearby mellah, or former Jewish quarter, preserve traditional mud-brick architecture, while ruined kasbahs on the hillside overlook the valley.

Most visitors use Tinghir as a base for the Todra Gorge, about 15 kilometres to the north, where sheer limestone walls rise to roughly 300 metres and attract climbers and hikers. In town, visitors can walk through the palm grove, browse the weekly souk and climb to the kasbah ruins for views over the oasis and surrounding hills.

Tinghir remains a modest provincial centre rather than a business hub, with an economy rooted in agriculture, trade and tourism. Its Amazigh identity is visible in daily life, crafts and the local Amazigh cuisine, including tajines, couscous, dates, almonds and mint tea served in small cafés and guesthouses.

For leisure travellers, Tinghir is a practical stop on routes between Ouarzazate and the Sahara and a starting point for rock climbing, trekking and desert excursions. Business and group travellers passing through the region also use the town as a staging point for visits to the gorge, nearby kasbahs and the wider Drâa-Tafilalet area.
